During the 1970s, the most thriving areas were the Jiaotongtai commercial center, night market, and Kangle Street. These places have attracted consumerism of the population of the nearby ten or more towns and townships.
During its most glorious past, it had five theaters, 12 restaurnats, and 28 hotels. Although the good old days have since slid away, the Jiaotongtai area, including Yanping Road, Mincyuan Road, Jhongshan Road, Fusing Road, Chenggong Street and Changchun Street, is still the most prosperous commercial section.
In terms of transportation, Xinying is very convenient. Highway 1 and the Western Line Railroad pass through it.
To its west, there is the Jhongshan Freeway with a interchange near Xinying. This convenience in traffic promotes commercial and industrial developments in Xinying.
Manufacturing industries commenced quite early in Xinying. During the Japanese occupation sugar-production led related industries to blossom.
The "three big companies" frequently mentioned by the elders of Xinying include Xinying Sugar Factory, Douke Company (the Sinsheng Ramie Factory) and the Xinying Factory of Taiwan Paper Company, which all contributed greatly to the economic boom of Xinying. The Xinsheng Ramie Factory even produced the richest personage of Xinying. Mr. Kong Lianzheng. However, owing to the cessation of sugar-production and the increase in automation in industries, the three big companies lost their precious glory.
At present, there are a few important industrial parks and firms in Xinying, such as the Dongshan Road Industrial Park, Xinying Industrial Park, the Xinying Factory of Taiwan Paper Company, the Xinying Factory of Taiwan Scott & Co, etc. The Xinying Industrial Park occupies an area of 120 hectares, accommodating 153 firms and is home to many nation-renowned companies.
Agricultural land spreads across approximately 3822.13 hectares.
Traditional small-scale operators produce rice, sugarcane-based products, sorghum, corn, and other grains.
